This place in time represents us as a family standing strong in the face of a media and political frenzy around the passing of our beloved Aunty Sherry in September 2020. We lost Aunty Sherry in tragic circumstances at the Brisbane Watchhouse that triggered an avalanche of attention around Australia and abroad due to the BLM (Black Lives Matters) Movements around the world. The neglectful circumstances around her passing warranted an officer to be stood down due to their inability to provide adequate services to Aunty Sherry in QPS’s care, which further illuminates the need for an overhaul of engagement and culturally appropriate awareness training for all QPS & Department of Health workers who care and service inmates in these institutions in terms of preventing future deaths in custody.

I felt compelled to document through art the profound impact that whole period had on me, my family and also the Brisbane and communities around the country. A feeling of love and support from people far and wide empowered us to share Aunty Sherry’s story. We are still waiting for our Coronial Inquest due this year to be confirmed but watch this black space.
